There are many interpretations of what a “community” is. The definition we like best goes something like, “Members of a community support each other in various ways, contributing to a sense of well-being and shared identity.” We will try to write this without crying out of gratitude for the skydiving community (AKA – the group made up of pure AWESOMENESS).
Skydivers are often unfairly stigmatized as being a crazy group of people who don’t give a rip about anything – especially living! Are skydivers just intimidating oddities who are willingly on an inevitable trip to their own demise? Nope, not even close. In actuality, skydivers are committed to finding true happiness and freedom in this lifetime.
Who makes up the community? Avid skydivers are not “just skydivers” (although there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that)! We are a diverse community, made up of people from all walks of life, opinions, and personalities. Skydivers are pharmacists, teachers, students, advocates, construction workers, accountants, and much more. We would bet that at least one person from every profession is a skydiver!
What percent of the population goes skydiving? This is a difficult question to answer because many people skydive more than once and it skews the statistics. It’s safe to say that about 1-2% of the American population has been skydiving at least once. The United States Parachute Association (USPA) has about 41,000 active members worldwide, and this number continues to grow.
What percentage of skydivers are female? About 14% of skydivers identify as female. Despite people who identify as female being a minority in the sport, this makes them no less influential.
Many would agree that skydiving brings a sense of connection to the world, the universe, and oneself, an aura of mindfulness, and a state of pure bliss. So yes, we’d say skydiving is definitely a spiritual experience!
Why is skydiving life-changing? Skydiving presents the ideal opportunity to conquer many fears at once. Here are a few things that have caused real skydivers apprehension in the beginning: meeting new people (what if they think I’m weird!?), messing up the skydive, the general unpredictability of the jump, and safety (will I make it through this?). These are all valid concerns, but we’re certain they’ll dissipate the second you step foot on the dropzone, and the excitement will take over. We ride a wave of happiness when we overcome fears, and something switches in our brains when we do this by skydiving. Suddenly, we’re humbly invincible … let us explain. After the freefall, when the parachute opens, we’re literally and metaphorically walking on sunshine. This state of abeyance lets us see how tiny all of our problems are back on the ground, and for a moment, life doesn’t feel real. But the beautiful thing is that IT IS REAL and this experience confirms life is beautiful. Getting to have this encounter over and over again with your sky friends is unbeatable.
Skydivers strive to foster an environment of constant improvement. Learning never stops; we are always students. Mentorship and coaching programs allow newcomers to feel like they belong and that we enjoy teaching them.
Skydiving is an extreme sport that inherently carries a calculated amount of risk. People in the community trust and rely on one another! The nature of the sport expedites this need for reliability, and this strengthens the bond.
The community embodies a genuine sense of camaraderie and inclusivity for students and seasoned jumpers. We are all conscious of how difficult it can be to go to a new place and try a new thing, especially something as daunting as skydiving!
The skydiving community is full of strangers who quickly become friends, who are now family. If you feel like you’ve never quite fit in anywhere else, have a burning desire to live life with boundless enthusiasm, and want to grow as an individual, skydiving may be for you.
