Best Time to Skydive

Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Skydiving is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a lot of people, so it’s completely normal to want to nail every aspect of the jump. And that includes finding the absolute best time to skydive, whether that’s the time of year or the time of day.

So, what is the best time to go skydiving? In this article, we’ll cover if it’s better to skydive in the summer or winter, the best time of day to skydive, and, maybe most importantly, when you should not skydive.

Of course, the answers to these questions depend on where in the world, or even the country, you’re looking to skydive. Here, we’ll go over some general advice about optimal skydive scheduling and look at the very best time to skydive in our home state of Georgia!

Best Time of Year to Skydive

best time of day to go skydivingWe like to think that anytime is the best time to skydive! Whenever we have the opportunity to jump out of an airplane, we take it! But certain seasons are more enjoyable than others when it comes to outdoor activities.
We’re very fortunate at Skydive Monroe that our southern climate allows us to be open all year round. Many locations in the far North and South only get to skydive half of the year (or sometimes less!) because of extreme temperatures and weather. Mild and predictable climates like ours allow for longer skydiving seasons and more jumping.

Having said that, summer is still the peak skydiving season here in the Peach State. Although skydiving through the winter is possible for places like ours that are warm enough to avoid a seasonal shutdown, summer is when skydiving is in high gear. The lovely long days allow us to jump between dawn and dusk!

But that doesn’t mean that summer is absent of any seasonal hazards. Summertime in Georgia can be hot, and you should plan accordingly when heading to the dropzone (i.e. sunscreen, lots of water, etc.). The good news is that the air gets cooler on the way up – yay for natural AC! Getting to cool off during the jump is just the icing on the cake of an already amazing experience.

Since the temperature can vary based on time of year and even each phase of the jump, check out exactly what to wear skydiving for any time of year before heading to the dropzone.

Best Time of Day to Skydive

Some skydivers among us have a favorite time of day for jumping. Morning, midday, and evening all offer very different experiences when it comes to skydiving. There are even occasional opportunities for night jumpingThe best time of day to go skydiving is subjective. Here’s the skinny on what to expect at different jump times.

Morning

Early jumps are popular because they typically happen before things start to get busy. Additionally, if the weather looks iffy, there’s a chance you’ll get to jump before the system rolls in. The air is often cooler and smoother in the morning as well, making for a serene and invigorating experience.

Midday

There’s an energy to high noon that lends itself well to adventure sports. The dropzone is bustling, the sun is bright, and the blood is pumping. If you want to see Skydive Monroe at full tilt, midday is the way to go. Just beware that for many months here in Georgia, it’s going to be HOT!

Evening

Is skydiving at sunset good? Psh, it’s great. Evening jumps are a not-so-secret skydiving treasure! Licensed jumpers yearn to be on the last load of the day because of the beauty and significance. There aren’t words to describe the brilliance of experiencing a sunset from the sky. As a bonus, the low sun offers gorgeous lighting for skydiving video.

Night

Night SkydivingNight jumps are a bit of a rite of passage for experienced skydivers because of the extra risk and safety protocols involved. Exiting an airplane into complete darkness, the still of the night all around you as you freefall at 120 mph, isn’t for the faint of heart! That’s why night tandem skydiving isn’t allowed – a lot of extra training and safety considerations go into planning a night skydive. So, if you’re dreaming about flying under the light of the moon, you’ll just have to get your skydiving license!

When Should You NOT Skydive?

At Skydive Monroe, we prioritize safety above all else. Here are some situations when you should not skydive:

Adverse Weather Conditions

Strong or gusty wind, rain, and cloud cover that leads to poor visibility are a no-go. Be mindful that conditions on the ground may be quite different from those at altitude. If we’re on a weather hold, know that it’s for good reason. As we say in skydiving: It is better to be on the ground wishing you were in the sky than in the sky wishing you were on the ground!

Health Issues

Certain health conditions should give you pause when planning your skydive. Heart conditions, severe asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder, and recent injuries or surgeries may prevent you from being a candidate for skydiving. Check with your doctor before booking your jump.

Pregnancy

Tandem skydiving is built for two, not three! Skydiving is an inherently risky sport, and jumping with a baby on board adds a layer of risk – for both passengers. Between pressure and oxygen level changes, the heart-pumping adrenaline surge, and a higher susceptibility to injury, it’s best to keep your feet on terra firma.

Under the Influence

Being intoxicated impairs judgment and coordination. If you have been drinking, you will not be jumping. Period.

Weight Requirements

Skydiving weight limits are a matter of safety. Skydiving equipment manufacturers impose maximum weight limits following rigorous testing; compliance is crucial. The health and well-being of our tandem instructors is impacted by weight as well. At Skydive Monroe, the weight limit is 225 lbs for men and 170 lbs for women, including clothing and shoes. If you have any questions about our weight requirements, please get in touch!

So there you have it! There are optimal times of year and day to go skydiving, but the best time is whenever YOU want to. Are you ready to choose a date and time for your jump?! Check our availability! Blue skies!
